Description
I conceived the idea of this book during my residency years in the Graduate Periodontal Program at Case Western Reserve University where I encountered a very different yet effective method of teaching. Dr. Bissada, our professor, asked each resident and fellow to review one article either from classic or modern literature. The goal was for us to then create questions and answers based on these articles. During the seminars, he read out these questions and asked each resident for the correct answer. Of course, secondary questions and further discussions ensued from this. This approach required careful scrutiny and painstaking evaluation of many articles, so it took more than just skimming through my periodontal books. Twelve articles and questions per seminar, plus the secondary questions, two seminars a week, 50 weeks per year, three years in residency plus six months of a fellowship amounted to this huge library of fundamental clinical questions and answers for most, if not all, implant and periodontal surgical procedures. Due to the nature of this textbook’s origin, it could not have been completed without the help of my peers and friends Dr. Mark Hebeish, Dr. Basmah Alamiri, Dr. Peter Amin, Dr. Ehab Moussa and Dr. Ernest Baghat. Special recognition must be given to Dr. Nabil Bissada, for his long-standing guidance and extensive contribution to this book.
Each chapter from this book represents a separate entity into itself. It can be read by itself and has no direct correlation to the other chapters in the book. However, after all the chapters are not only read but also studied, then the reader will gain a better perspective of all the factors that are involved in the treatment planning and clinical execution of the periodontal and implant surgeries.
The goal of this book is to provide a study guide and literature review not only for the periodontal specialists but also for general dentists that practice oral implantology and periodontal surgery. The aim was not to encompass the entirety of periodontology and oral implantology but instead to focus on its core clinical concepts. As the field of periodontal and implant dentistry is changing at a very fast pace due to research and modern technological advances, only by updating our knowledge we will be able to keep up with the modern trends.
